Make Money By Yellow Pages "Squatting"

Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, a lot of land in the United States was acquired by squatting. Vast stretches of land were untitled and unclaimed, so anyone who wanted to own their own piece of land would build a house on it and start farming or ranching. After a length of time, they could take out a title to the land if they were inclined to observe such formalities.

As a 21st century business person, whether you are a locksmith or a lawyer, you may occasionally have the opportunity to do something like squatting to promote your business.

Every year a few of your competitors go out of business. There is a natural turnover in business, so you will see this happen every once in a while.

When you learn that a competitor has gone out of business, check to see if they had a Yellow Pages ad. If they did, that is advertising that has been paid for and will continue getting exposure for the rest of the year.

Contact the local telephone company and ask to have an extra phone line put in. The cost should be fairly minimal. But then, after a price has been quoted, ask for your old competitors telephone number for that price.

If that number has been released to be re-issued, you should be able to get it without extra cost.

For the rest of the year, you will receive telephone calls on that number, as a result of your out-of-business competitors Yellow Page ad and their repeat business.

When the new Yellow Pages come out, your call volume on that line will diminish. But you may want to keep that line for another year to see how many calls you get from things like business cards that person had passed out, or from repeat customers.

Be sure to train your employees to track every single call that comes in on that line, so you can determine how profitable it is.

Just like the squatters in the early days of U.S. history, you may be able to obtain a level of business just from taking over an unused telephone number.
